Niall was the son of a smith from Hillar, a small city in the north of Rethmyn, and one of the Twelve Luminaries. Being the the second youngest of six children, he had travelled to Saurjar for a new life. Despite not being of noble descent, he was accepted by Ramiel of Geirsa, a general, to train in combat. He was taught by Ramiel, and initially also by Gunvor, in swordmanship and other warrior arts.
When Ramiel, upon the news of his brother Lucter's death in Aghato, resigned as a general, Niall travelled with Ramiel and Gunvor to join Tyre in his quest against the Four Fiends. During the fight against the Fiends, Niall killed Savis.
